Its valentines day and I am sitting in my dorm room done with classes and quizzes figuring out what to write next and my facebook news feed says ” Punjab Film Censor Board refuses to watch Pad Man (a film about menstrual hygiene) for further clearance and here we are. Yes, I got my topic then and there loud and clear from the Nobel laureates present in our censorship board. The same laureates who think to abandon 786 from “Khiladi 786” might be a step towards devoutness or sanctitude.
The censor board might acclaim their duty to act against a phenomenon inconsistent with our culture basically. It’s not that simple to evaluate why Pakistanis with even some of the most basic roles in society act as agents of upholding taboos, an example might be some of you murmuring whats written in the header but let’s not go there.
Tolerance with as simple as its dictionary meaning seems to be one of the most complexed phenomena ever for us. As a test case lets review some of the cultural taboos which may or may not be vital for our existence in the near future. When we hear the word taboo we might search for a divorced couple looking for accommodation and being refused by pan Islamic landlords or an engagement which fails to transcend as a marriage by virtue of some million rupees short in dowry. There are untold stories about practices which were never solidified as our culture and breaking it further apart the smartphone armed Pakistani community has never been more adamant or hypocritical one must say. We have social media posts filled with abusive language, famous “bad duas” and our favorite word already mentioned in the header. As a matter of fact, the users’ aren’t to be blamed alone its the whole diaspora guarding the perception regime with discretion to determine moral standards.
There’s this word known as skepticism unfortunately misunderstood by the majority of our population categorizing their immature comments and morality lectures by the same word. Being presumptuous we have these heaven – hell predictions which have been outdated for quite a while now. It’s time to be critical, skeptical and above all clinical about our surroundings.
As we progress with time, standards change. There are new precedents to follow with something acceptable now might not be the case a decade ago yet there’s another addiction not to be tackled by ANF ( anti-narcotics force) which is basically “Judging people”. It looks like a fragile analogy comparing hardcore drugs with a mere judgment but the delicacy of a mere judgment goes far beyond those drugs ruining someone’s life, breaking a talented soul into pieces and what not.
If we promise to focus on our own life for once maybe ignoring and avoiding if someones spending excessive dollars on honeymoon, marrying a foreigner, prefers to wear light colors or as simple as eating seafood. Let it go and let us know how it goes on our Facebook page (link in the sidebar).
